A Podcast on Disability
10 Minutes Each
Looking for some bite-sized insight into the disability experience? Twenty two percent of all Canadians live with a disability… so we mic’d up our community to get the inside scoop. We invite you to listen to four short episodes ranging from thoughtful and serious to light-hearted lampoons. (PDFs readily available for the D/deaf by emailing: info@realwheels.ca)
Catch one, two, three, or all four episodes at once. At 10 minutes each, they’re a tasty snack for your ears! Tune in, enjoy, and share with anyone interested in the experience of one in five Canadians living with a disability.
Questions? Suggestions? Got an urge to weigh in on any of the episodes? We really do love to hear from you. Email info@realwheels.ca and we’ll get back to you.
Amy Amantea interviews actor and all-around creative
Emily Grace Brook in a spirited, frisky conversation, honing in on a popular tv series that informed Emily’s self-image in a pretty crappy way when she was a vulnerable teen. They re-imagine a key episode for a new generation. Sassy!
Episode 2 | ABOUT MY DISABILITY
Caspar Ryan is the longest living survivor of Juvenile Chronic Myelomonocetic Leukemia (sure, okay, call it JCML for short). Usually Caspar is behind a video camera, this time he’s the subject of attention.
We probably should have titled this About Me AND My Disability because you’ll gain as much insight into Caspar as a fully-rounded awesome human as you do his invisible disability.
Episode 3 | ON THE PERFORMATIVE NATURE OF DISABILITY
Realwheels’ former artistic director Rena Cohen interviews
Alfiya Battalova, PhD about some fundamental yet lesser-known facets of the disability experience. Alfiya also speaks to how the performing arts are changing perceptions of disability.
Alfiya’s PhD is in Disability Studies and here she applies a scholarly but also personal perspective, as she grew up in Russia where disability was, quite frankly, denied.
Episode 4 | WORDABILITY: THE GAME SHOW!
We admit it, this one’s wacko! Have a listen, have a giggle. Wordability: The Game Show was inspired by the idea of exploring disability-friendly vs. offensive language. Did we catch your trigger words? Which ones did we miss?
That’s right! Realwheels can officially add podcasting to the many accomplishments under our belts! Thanks for coming by! The episodes will remain up for your listening pleasure at any time or place. Thank you for joining us. Please continue to share with anyone interesting in gaining insight into the disability experience.
Thank you! Time to enjoy summer! 🌞
